Q&A: Have we made being a “single mom” too easy?

Question by Rain: Have we made being a “single mom” too easy?
Have we as a culture made being a “single mom” look too easy?
What made me ask this question is I am hearing young girls planning their futures, and saying “Oh, if my boyfriend doesn’t want to be with me and I get pregnant, I’ll just be a single mom. People do it all the time.”
I am a mother of a wonderful 9-month-old. I couldn’t ask for a better child. My husband and I have been married for 10 years, and I am so grateful every day that we have each other because taking care of a baby 24/7, day in and day out is HARD! We are both tired all the time. We are both having to give up a lot of what we used to enjoy and a lot of our own personal freedoms to be there for our child.
I can’t begin to imagine trying to do all that needs to be done for myself and my child on my own.
Yet we have these young girls thinking that they can have a baby and have a life, too, and it is all going to come easily and naturally. I think a lot of this is coming from the television and media, who seem to gloss over single motherhood and make it look easy.
Am I wrong?

People need to understand everyones situation is DIFFERENT. Some people have money and support from family, others don’t. Thats why its easier for some single mothers than others.

Q&A: Question for dog owners who are single…?

Question by it’s me!: Question for dog owners who are single…?
For years I’ve on and off considered getting a dog. I go through phases where I’ll search online “petfinders”, and then realize that I probably shouldn’t get one because 1.) being single it’d be a lot of responsibility for me by myself, and 2.) the dog would be kind of lonely as I work 9 hrs./day.

Plus, when I go on vacation or to my parents’ house I’d have to put it up in a kennel or something because I don’t know anyone who’d watch it & my parents don’t like dogs.
But, I REALLY want one sometimes….like now. =( It’s probably nice coming home to “someone.”

Talk me out of it. Give me reasons why I shouldn’t get one.
Thanks, peeps. I forgot to mention. Any other kind of pet is out of the question. In fact, I reeeeally dislike cats.

Q&A: opinions on single MMR jabs?

Question by axbxc: opinions on single MMR jabs?
So my son is now 12 months and im booking him for single MMR vaccines. What does everyone think about the single jabs? worth it, or not? I just wanted to find out other peoples responses as i only know a few people who have had their children done privately!
im not after for a personal attack on my decision, i want to know what people think about the single jabs in general, and if any one on here has had their children done
wow im surprised at the response and how strongly people are against the single jabs. I am not using my son as research, it’s what i feel is best, and for piece of mind. But thanks for all answers i just wanted to see what people thought, it wont affect my decision – was just curiosity. icon smile Q&A: opinions on single MMR jabs?

Which would you buy? Single Family Home or Duplex?

Question by weirdiscomplimentary: Which would you buy? Single Family Home or Duplex?
My husband and I are looking at two different properties:

Property 1: Our “dream home” — we’re super happy with the idea of living in this house. The layout is perfect. No garage, small yard and not the best neighborhood, though. Not terribly “crime-ridden” but not a high-value area. The other houses are priced around $ 140K, this house (totally remodeled) has been priced at $ 190K. At $ 190K, it would just work with our monthly budget (we have savings in reserve, but are trying not to tap into those). Although this house isn’t in a high-value area, it is in a neighborhood that *could* be a high-value area….right near a big, safe, beloved public park.

Property 2: A duplex in a really nice single-family-home neighborhood. Both units are pretty nice-looking, although the kitchens are small and the bedrooms are spread out over the main floor and the lower level. This is an AMAZING neighborhood, though. Beautiful, stable, and very nice. Other houses on the block are valued at $ 260-400K. This duplex is priced at $ 220K! It’s just out of our reach in terms of affordability (especially with the taxes, which are $ 4,500 in comparison with $ 3,000 at the other place), but if we found renters, we could afford it for now, and potentially we could turn the whole thing into a single family home in a few years. This house is located in the middle of 3 private college campuses — about 1 mile from each of them.

Questions:

1. What are some considerations to take into account before becoming a landlord? Keep in mind, we would be living in one of the units, so we’d only be renting out one unit and we’d be on-site.
2. Is my assumption that we could find college students to rent to accurate? Are college students willing to walk/bike/drive a mile to get to campus? Would they want to live in a nice, well-established neighborhood that is quiet?
3. If it were you, which property would you buy? The duplex in the nice-neighborhood where you’d be guaranteed that your property would increase in value, but where you would HAVE to be a landlord in order to afford it? Or the dream-home in the questionable, but safe neighborhood?

Answer by Ronald R
would you rather eat well or sleep well.

Personally, I’d buy the duplex, I’ve had one for over 25 years, and it gives me great freedom to do what I want, instead of having to earn money to pay the mortgage.

You;’ll find college students if the price is right. If the place is nice, you may find professors or graduate students. A mile isn’t all that far, but you have to look at the demographics. Are there other students living in the neighborhood?

I think duplexes and triplexes are an overlooked way to live economically in a nice location, and not enough people take advantage of it. I know this from experience.

Question by G: What’s the average net income for a single twenty something?
When I say “Net” I mean after taxes, bills, and rent (NOT food, clothes, or entertainment).

I make about $ 2K a month after taxes and 401K deductions. Then my expenses are:

Rent: $ 525
Student Loan Bill: $ 150
Internet: $ 50
Electricity: ~$ 75

Which leaves me with about $ 1200 spending money. I usually pay down Credit Card debt (really close to closing it out though) with $ 200 and then put another $ 200 in Savings. So that leaves me with $ 800/month or about $ 200/week to do everything I want to do, not to mention buy groceries & gas. This seems kind of low, but I don’t think I make an extremely small salary for my age, nor do I think my expenses are that high (though I do need to pay off the credit card debt). I’m just wondering what the average is, or how others are doing I guess.

Do most people have 50% of their post-tax income out the door without even buying anything yet? Or is the average more or less than that?

Best answer:

Answer by redhead
Your income is about average for your age bracket. The reason you probably feel like your money isn’t much is because you are paying $ 200.00 a month for credit cards, and $ 150.00 a month per student loan. Once those are paid off you will have an extra $ 350.00 a month for what you want.
To your credit:
1) You obviously know how to budget because you know where all your money goes.
2) You are paying of a student loan which typically means that you have a degree which gives you a better chance for higher paying jobs and promotions.
3) You are putting money in your 401K and saving for retirement. Good for you!
4) You are putting $ 200.00 in savings every month.
Those people you see that you think have more money than you do are probably not contributing to a 401, not putting money aside for saving, probably don’t have a student loan, and are not working to pay off their credit cards to be out of debt. You are doing the right thing and these other people will end up with no savings, probably big debt and only a bunch of spent money to show for it. Keep up your good work and you will soon be reaping the rewards from it!

Question by chynie1: Single mom looking for work at home…without spending alot of money…where is good?
Looking for something to do at home…single mom of 4 and on a serious budget…so spending alot of money is out of the question..is it possible to find something?

Watch out for network marketing “opportunities” – these are scams. You should be getting a lot of offers.

You could try writing magazine articles (on or offline variety). Or run a website with ads on it (small money).
