Question by Johnny Boy: Am I throwing away my only opportunity to be successful?
I’m 29, married and have 2 girls. I work in highway construction, for my dad. hes a sub-contractor. The company has been very successful for the past 40 years. I spend M-F away from and stay in motels. I’m making about 48,000 a year, but that involves lots of overtime. I guess within about 15 years he is probably going to let me start running my own business doing the same thing. That answer is never clear because I’m sure it will be hard for him not to be running his business. I have been involved in this work ever since I was kid. Most my time spent with my dad when I was young was when I went with him to work. Now I’m his foreman and I’m so tired of this work. I am plum sick of this. I know this kind of work pays well and especially when you own the company. I cant handle knowing that I have probably 25 years more until I could walk away from it. Its difficult to say that money isn’t enough to keep me. Im like everyone, more is better. I fear 25 years down the road I’ll look back and wish I would have stuck it out. Also I will note that when I say hand over a business its not money being handed over its alot of responsibility. Also my brother in law is probably in this thing some where. He also runs jobs for him.
At the moment this work is what I do best, I wish I was great at something else. I want a life where I can be more family involved more than a couple days a week.
