Pi Day is March 14th: When Geeks of the World Unite — Media Availability: The Giant Pi

INFORMATION ON PREVIOUS YEARS PI DAY COLLECTORS POSTERS:

Last year’s 2008 Pi Day Collector poster featured Sir Isaac Newton, the famous English scientist and mathematician, and Lucasian professor at Cambridge University, whose work on pi bridged the change from the use by mathematicians of the tools of geometry, to the more abstract analytical methods of calculus. These tools not only ultimately made the calculation of billions of digits of pi possible (the total number of digits is infinite), but ushered in a new age in math and science.

The 2007 Pi Day collector poster featured the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, who popularized the use of the Greek letter pi to symbolize the ratio of the circumference to the diameter, and who was regarded as one of history’s greatest mathematicians. His “Euler Identity” formula tied together five fundamental mathematical constants – 0, 1, pi, e, and i – in a single elegant equation. 2007 was also the tercentenary of Euler’s birth.

The 2006 Pi Day special collector’s edition featured Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician who was one of the first to accurately approximate the value of pi, using a geometrical technique which anticipated the calculus developed centuries later by competing mathematical geniuses Newton and Leibniz (to the eternal consternation of some high school students).

Jennifer Howe Rogan, while on bed rest with her third pregnancy, started dabbling on eBay with children’s retail. She also assisted a few friends overseas with obtaining certain clothing lines that they could not get locally. It was then that she created a little side business and realized that eBay was a unique way to supplement her family income. It also helped keep her mind at ease during tough moments.

Now she is looking to start up the first brick-and-mortar store for her expanding business, So Sweet Boutique Children’s Specialty Clothing Store, on March 18th Just Outside of Orlando, Florida in the small town of Oviedo, Fla.

It was after her pregnancy that she created her internet boutique selling upscale clothing. She established a small clientele and had home parties locally, generating more income. Inspired by her ability to make the system work, she wrote a book called “The Method to the Madness,” which helps other work-at-home parents understand how to sell children’s retail over the internet and on eBay. From start to finish it’s packed full of resources and tips on getting started and what mistakes to avoid.

So Sweet Boutique has been in business for over 2 years! Jennifer’s vision grew and created the spark to open a brick-and-mortar store. She knew that a children’s boutique would be a perfect fit in her small town of Oviedo, Florida. Oviedo is located just outside of Orlando and Daytona Beach nestled in central Florida.

Jennifer teamed up with former nursing college buddy Susan Powers to start the process of opening a store. While learning the ropes with Susan, Jennifer created an online magazine and free newsletter geared to the children’s retail industry. The magazine and newsletter aren’t just for boutique owners, but also geared for sales reps, fashion designers, manufacturers, and anyone in the children’s apparel industry! Project Manager Debbie Thomas runs their magazine, E-Boutique Online. Debbie is a “work-at-home grandmother” (WAHG) who had technical experience prior to coming on board with Jennifer and Susan.

“We are a dynamic team,” says Howe Rogan. “It’s hard to believe it all started from my closet and rolling racks of clothing in my dining room!” Together the three of them work on different angles of the children’s apparel industry while offering resources and their endless research to everyone.

Later this week So Sweet Boutique will open their first brick-and-mortar store locally in Oviedo, Florida. Their first shop is in a quaint little area in downtown on Broadway Street. They will be offering flower girl dresses, boy’s suits and tuxedos, pageant clothing, smocked outfits, and fun and comfy clothing sets that children can wear to school on a daily basis. Most outfits will be under $ 40.00 and flower girl dresses and pageant wear will be under $ 75.00, making it affordable for just about everyone.

So Sweet Boutique will be at 66 West Broadway Street near Lawton Elementary School, The Secret Garden day spa, and Oviedo Baptist Church. They are happy to join partnerships with local schools contributing 20% of net sales to participating schools, churches and fundraisers.

‘Miracles For MSA’ Proclaims March as Multiple System Atrophy Awareness Month

There is no Michael J. Fox. Nor a Muhammad Ali or a Lou Gehrig. But more than 1,000 fans—known on Facebook as Miracles For MSA—have proclaimed March as Multiple System Atrophy Awareness Month.

Passionate patients, caregivers, researchers, friends, and family members want everyone to know about this rare, incurable brain disease that combines many symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease and ALS, with cerebellar ataxia and autonomic failure. Multiple System Atrophy also known as MSA, affects multiple systems of the body. It’s a disease that’s hard to diagnose. And it wreaks havoc on not only the patient but all of those who love the patient as well.

“Miracles For MSA,” a Facebook page connecting those affected by MSA worldwide, stemmed from a similarly named charity event last March in Nashville, Tenn. It brought together Pittsburgh Steeler’s Cornerback Fernando Bryant, a promising genomic research initiative, a Michigan life science startup, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, to raise money for life-saving MSA research. The idea for MSA Awareness month was sparked by Bryant’s former basketball coach, Bob Summers, on the Miracles for MSA Facebook page. Summers’ wife suffers from MSA.

“MSA is so rare that many cases are wrongly diagnosed as Parkinson’s or other diseases with similar symptoms,” said Pam Bower, an active member of the Facebook page, who’s mother-in-law was afflicted with MSA. “My hope with the MSA Awareness month is that the worldwide MSA community will feel more united and will be inspired to do more to raise the profile of this disease and to raise funds.”

Other organizations have joined the effort to proclaim March as MSA Awareness month. A prominent organization supporting greater awareness is the Shy-Drager Syndrome (SDS) Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) Support Group. “By declaring March Multiple System Atrophy Awareness month, SDS/MSA organizers hope to take awareness and fundraising one step further, bringing this and other groups to the forefront of awareness collectively” stated Vera James, co-President of the SDS/MSA Support Group.

According to the National Institutes of Health, “Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by symptoms of autonomic nervous system failure such as fainting spells and bladder control problems, combined with motor control symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and loss of muscle coordination. MSA affects both men and women primarily in their 50s. The disease tends to advance rapidly over the course of nine to 10 years, with progressive loss of motor skills, eventual confinement to bed, and death. There is no remission from the disease.
