Linux Made Easy for Businesses with Mandrakelinux and Connect Computing
(PRWEB) November 29, 2004
Connect Computing Inc. is announcing a partnership with Mandrakesoft to offer Linux server software for small businesses. Two new distributions offered are Mandrakelinux Dedicated File Server, a Samba file server, and Mandrakelinux Dedicated Email Gateway, a Postfix email gateway that comes with SpamAssassin and virus protection software available.
Each is available now and cost under $ 1,000 which includes a two year support/upgrade package.
“We recognize that small and mid-sized business customers want practical solutions at a good price. So we’ve introduced a new line of Linux servers, called the Mandrakelinux Dedicated Server Series, to address this need. These server offerings are designed to be easy to migrate from Windows, and represent the practical, affordable choice for small and mid-sized IT”, stated the US Operations Manager for Mandrakesoft USA.
The idea is that all the tools needed to get a system up and running quickly are included on the distribution. Currently, with other server software, you have to install the server, then the email software, then the anti-virus software. The Mandrakelinux Dedicated Email Gateway gives you all of this functionality with the initial install which keeps the price down and means a faster return on investment.
The Mandrakelinux Dedicated File Server includes Samba 3 which is compatible with all Microsoft Windows networks and the CUPS printing system to manage printers.
“Connect Computing Inc has been working with Mandrakesoft for quite a while and I’m excited about this offering. We believe that Linux definitely allows small businesses to use technology without having to buy expensive and proprietary software. Mandrakesoft has been putting together good distributions, manuals, and support packages for sometime but these two new offerings are really geared for the small and medium businesses.”, stated Roy Hoobler, president of Connect Computing.
Connect Computing Inc is an IT Consulting firm which also offers distributions of Free and Open Software aimed at the small and medium size business markets. They support XRMS CRM, SQL-Ledger, and osCommerce as well as provide some custom development for their clients.

Linux Cron Jobs for Cloud Hosting from Pagoda Box
Rexburg, ID (PRWEB) February 29, 2012
Traditionally, cron jobs have automated tasks like clearing page cache, generating data feeds, or billing accounts from a site’s webserver. However, scalable web hosting requires multiple, distributed webservers, which made scheduling PHP cron jobs in a cloud environment difficult, until now.
The latest release from Pagoda Box simplifies cron automation for sites hosted in a cloud environment. Developers create scripts or commands in a site’s code as they would for any application. Cron jobs are then scheduled through a Boxfile config inside the code, or using standard Unix / Linux Cron Syntax in the web dashboard.
For example:
0 0 * * 0 = Once a week, midnight on Sunday
0 * * * * = Once an hour, beginning of hour
Pagoda Box automates the rest behind the scenes. A dedicated temporary server is launched for each scheduled job, the task is run, and the instance decommissioned on completion. In case of frequent recurring cron jobs, Pagoda Box even ensures individual tasks are complete before executing them again, preventing a compounding task that leads to total site failure.
For more about scheduling cron jobs for PHP sites in a cloud environment, or to see cron jobs in action, visit http://www.pagodabox.com/a/linux-cron-jobs.

Question by s_ainapur: what are the differences between windows process management and Linux process management?
Best answer:
Answer by Mehmet Y
The differences are very great.
Windows process management is obscured, though in principle there is some similarities to Linux.
All processes have unique IDs, in the current Operating Systems, they also have user identification and group identification to go with the processes. Different processes can have different priorities.
In Windows, memory is managed by the system and metadata about processes is often stored in the registry. Applications must go through Windows process scheduling controlled by the kernel. Furthermore process management can be regulated by a Windows based architecture. Inside Windows in the guts are hives, which control hardware and regulate the system. These areas are obscure and only true experts understand the innards.
In Linux, life is a bit different. The fundamental Linux and Unix variants are built around is that everything is a “file”, so information on processes is available as well as many other things, presuming you have the appropriate rights. As the root owner of a machine, a person has complete and unadulterated control over the system. This means that while processing has a default, the root can always change that. Typically in a Linux distribution, server/system based processes have a default priority that is higher than a user run process.
In both windows and Linux, processes can become detatched from interfaces and run in the background. These processes in Linux are known as Daemons which run various processes such as ftp service, your graphical window system like KDE, etc. Windows has these sorts of processes, but they are generally called services. Redhat often interchanges the term service with daemons. In Linux, turning a software into a “service” can be performed by detatching the process from a terminal. Generally, these processes are administered through a user and/or group dedicated to the service. For example, a web service might be granted the user www-data and a group called www-data.
In Windows you can review the process and control them through the task manager. With the right permisions, you can change priorities, kill the processes and find out more information. In Linux, processes can be controlled through a command called ps (list processes), kill (kill a process by id), pkill (kill a process by name ) and nice (change the priority of a process where a lower number is higher priority). A similar text based program to task manager is top, which displays the heaviest loading processes (by memory and cpu load) for a particular process.
